Si vous suivez le blog depuis un petit moment, vous connaissez certainement ma passion pour le groupe Écossais Biffy Clyro… Leur dernier album Opposites était sorti en 2013 et après une tournée mondiale et 3 concerts/nuits exceptionnel(le)s à Glasgow retraçant toute leur discographie fin 2014, nous n’avions plus eu de nouvelles… jusqu’au concert du jour de l’an dernier à Edimbourg où était apparue en plein set la petite nouvelle “On a bang“, annonçant l’arrivée imminente du nouvel album tant attendu. Et finalement, ça y est, hier nous avons eu un premier aperçu de ce nouvel album Ellipsis avec le titre “Wolves of winter”, diffusé en avant-première sur la radio Beats 1 d’Apple music… Et qu’est ce que ça donne ?

Je vais essayer d’être la plus objective possible malgré mon amour pour leur musique mais Biffy Clyro, c’est d’abord un groupe qui fonctionne, à savoir : 3 personnes (dont deux frères jumeaux) en phase, une équipe autour qui se donne à fond et surtout, une musique qui cartonne en live. Leurs 3 premiers albums étaient bruts, “heavy”… alors que les 3 derniers quant à eux sont plus mélodieux et travaillés. Deux styles différents donc qui allaient forcément influencer le petit dernier et en effet, c’est le cas, tout en étant complètement différent.

Le premier single de l’album Ellipsis (symbolisé par 3 points “…”) qui sortira le 8 juillet seulemeeeeeent s’appelle donc “Wolves of winter” et ça donne ça.

Concrètement, c’est un mélange de leur ancien style “heavy” et de leurs derniers albums beaucoup plus travaillés et mieux produits. C’est exactement ce que j’attendais et ce que j’espérais, quelque chose de lourd, de presque garage/90s mais qui garde l’instrumentalisation des derniers albums. Ils ont gardé ce qui fonctionnait jusqu’à présent et l’ont amélioré. Ce que je préfère par dessus tout ? C’est qu’une fois encore l’album soit pensé pour être joué en live, “Wolves of winter” est une chanson de foule, une chanson que des milliers de personnes pourront reprendre à l’unisson et j’en frémis d’avance !

Simon Neil (le guitariste/chanteur) a dit que c’était certainement le meilleur album qu’ils aient fait et que ça passerait ou ça casserait. Pour moi et les fans, ça passe, reste à voir la réaction du public mais pour le moment, c’est positif et j’espère que Biffy Clyro parviendront enfin à percer en France où ils peinent à se faire connaître alors qu’ils remplissent des salles de 15000 personnes en Angleterre…

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you must know about my passion for the Scottish band Biffy Clyro… Their latest album Opposites had been released in 2013 and after a world tour and 3 exceptional concerts/nights late 2014 in Glasgow recounting their whole discography, no more updates… until their New Year’s Eve concert in Edimbourg when they sang their new song “On a bang” in the middle of their set list, which announced a long-awaited new album release. And that’s it, yesterday we got a glimpse of this new album called Ellipsis with the song “Wolves of winter”, released as a preview showing on Apple music Beats 1 radio… And how is it?

I’m going to try to be as impartial as I can, in spite of my love for their music, but Biffy Clyro, it’s most and for all a band that works, that is to say: 3 people (of whom two twin brothers) in tune, a staff working their asses off, and most important of all, a music that’s awesome when played live. The 3 first albums were raw, “heavy”… whereas the 3 last were more melodious and elaborate. Two different styles that were bound to influence the latest, and it did, but at the same time it is totally different.

The first single from the album Ellipsis (symbolised by 3 dots “…”) won’t be released until July 8th, it is called “Wolves of winter” and it sounds something like that.

In concrete terms, it is a mix between their old “heavy” style and their more elaborate and better produced last albums. It is exactly what I was expecting and hoping for, something heavy, almost with a garage/90s vibe to it, but still with the instrumentation from their latest albums. What I love the most? The fact that once again the album was thought out to be played live, “Wolves of winter” is a mass song, a song that thousands of people will be able to sing together, and I’m already shivering at the mere thought of it!

Simon Neil (guitarist and singer) said it was probably the best album they had recorded, and that it was a make or break situation. For me and the fans, it’s a win, although we should wait for the audience reaction, but for now, it is positive, and I hope Biffy Clyro will manage to get a break through in France where they have a hard time getting to be known, whereas they fill up concert halls with 15 000 people in the UK…
